Column is a venture-backed software company. Our team works hybrid-remotely with a physical headquarters in New York City. 

We are a diverse group of engineers, designers, and builders who are committed to creating software that supports an informed public. 

Five years ago, we started with legal notices. Today, we process more notices than anyone else in the US. We recently expanded into improving the process of publishing obituaries and classifieds.

We work with some fantastic customers and partners who want to fix broken processes, investors who believe in our mission, and teammates (we say: Columnists) who want to be the best in the world at what we do.

Operating Principles

Any organization requires a massive amount of coordination between all different kinds of people, with all different styles and all different charters. Operating principles are our shared agreement about how to get the work done and how to make decisions. It's impossible to get through a day at Column without hearing them (but not in an obnoxious way).

Nail the basics.

Prepare for meetings, be on time, read the agenda, take notes, test before shipping, seek feedback, and repeat! The basics are a prerequisite to our success.

Dive in.

We are a startup — the company isn’t built yet, and there are a ton of things we need to fix. So, roll up your sleeves and dive in. There are infinite reasons something can’t or won’t work. Columnists start with why it can and will. We aren’t naive; we are just committed to doing the hard work that others won’t.

Ship simplicity.

It's hard to make something simple. Columnists practice clarity and exercise concision. We go the extra mile to refine our work for the delight of our customers.

Everything at Column started as an idea. And every Columnist has ideas that need to be heard. When you put in the work to make your idea a part of Column, you grow, the company grows, and we're all better off for it.

Hybrid-Remote

We are primarily a remote company with team members distributed around the world. We are also establishing a physical office in New York City, so come help open it!

Stock Options

We are looking for mission-driven builders and hope many will stay with us on our path to an initial public offering. To recognize team members for their contributions, all Columnists are awarded stock options. We want the people who build Column to benefit from Column’s success.

Parental Leave

We offer 16-weeks of paid parental leave per birth, adoption or fostering event. We trust our team members to make wise choices about when and how to build their family. So, Columnists can use this leave all at once or space it out across the first year after their family grows.
